Ann Arbor Polar Plunge 2011

Ann Arbor Polar Plunge 2011

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page!

My name is Ben and this will be my second year participating in the Polar Plunge. The Polar Plunge raises money for the Special Olympics. I have three brothers with Down syndrome and this year both Jimmy and Caleb will be participating in the Special Olympics. They really enjoy it and it makes them feel proud! I am honored to support the Special Olympics!

Thanks!

My "baby" boy

Elijah is my baby, although he isn't really a baby anymore. He is 4 1/2 years old. He is tiny though and that's one reason I think of him as a baby. And the fact that he loves to be picked up and held and also will climb into my lap whenever I sit down.:)He is wearing 2t pants and 3t tops but don't let his little size fool you. He is quite independent and very helpful too. He likes to dress himself and gets quite upset if you do it for him. You can only help, if he asks you to.:) He can put his pants on and most times his shirt too. He is able to put his sleeper pajamas on and zips them up all by himself. He hasn't mastered his socks yet, but he's trying! And every once in a while, he gets his shoes on all by himself.

He is such a big helper too. If I drop something, he rushes to pick it up. He takes the silverware out of the dishwasher and puts it in the drawer. He isn't yet tall enough to see into the drawer so it ends up all over but I sure appreciate his help. He knows where every pot and pan goes in the kitchen.:) When I'm folding clothes, he loves to help by putting them in little piles on the bed. And when I am making a bed, he is right there, tucking in the sheets with me. When it's bath time, he runs to get the towels and bubbles. When his nose starts to run, he goes into the bathroom and gets his own kleenex. If Caleb is having trouble trying to unzip his jacket, it is always Elijah who runs over to help him. It's so cute!

I'm amazed by this little guy of mine, who I can't help but think would be transferred to an institution by now, if he was not adopted. He's so tiny and timid of new surroundings that I know it would just break his spirit to be in such a horrid place.:( Praise God, Elijah is ours, we love him so!! He has really developed quite the personality. He loves to tease and then giggles afterward. When I sit on the floor, he will come up from behind and give me a bear hug around my neck and then leans around and kisses my cheek (my personal favorite). We are so blessed with the gift of Elijah. Another gift that I am not worthy to receive but am so very thankful for!

He's Mine

Look at that face! This boy loves his pizza. Actually, he loves a lot of different foods. He is a pretty good eater. As far as Ds goes, he is in the 90-95 percentile for height and weight. And he has a lot of energy, trust me....ALOT! But that is one of the things that keeps me young. Caleb's energy...Really! When I adopted Caleb, both Jimmy and Ben were already teenagers. By that time, I was used to sleeping in on the weekends, relaxing on my days off, reading or watching TV pretty much whenever I wanted...you get the picture. But no more. Caleb is always on the go! I can't remember the last time I slept past 7:00am on the weekend, or took a nice relaxing bath, and TV...I'm lucky to catch a glimpse of the weather report. The shows I used to watch are forgotten and now replaced with "Diego", "Elmo", "Blues Clues", and various Disney flicks. IF I do get a chance to catch a moment of TV, I have to have the closed caption on because I usually don't get to hear much of it.

BUT, I wouldn't trade my life for the world. I honestly never had it so good! Instead of sleeping in on the weekends, I get to wake up with a kiss from Caleb (or the alarm going off on his door warning me he is up. LOL!) But either way, I love to wake up to my little sleepy head's big smile and half opened eyes. And he is the best snuggler in the world! He gives and asks for hugs several times throughout the day....sounds pretty good huh? But believe me, he can be challenging and there are days when 8:00pm (bedtime) can't come soon enough.

But he's mine and I love him more than I can say! He calls me Mommy, how awesome is that? I didn't even give birth to him, but I get to be his Mommy. See that shirt he has on? When I told him the M is for Michigan, he said "No, M is for Mommy!" God is so Good!
So who cares about, relaxing, sleeping in.....it's all overrated anyway right?!:)
